Following a lopsided 5-2 loss against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night, Paul MacLean told reporters that "theres a lack of focus, theres a lack of leadership and theres a lack of preparation" with his struggling team. Budinger was activated Wednesday before the Wolves hosted the Phoenix Suns. He missed the first 34 games of the season after having surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee before the preseason.DUNEDIN, Florida – On Wednesday, it was J.A. Happs turn to play in the ongoing game of hot potato, better known as the competition to determine who will comprise the back end of the Blue Jays starting rotation. When the figurative music stops on March 31, Opening Day, general manager Alex Anthopoulos, manager John Gibbons and pitching coach Pete Walker will make whats becoming an increasingly difficult decision thanks to consistently mediocre to subpar performances by the candidates. Walker said before Wednesdays 11-6 win over the Phillies that the game was a "big start" for Happ. He needed to pitch in the strike zone. Happ needed to force Philadephias hitters to make contact. He was scheduled to pitch four or five innings with a pitch count of 70, give or take a few. Turns out Happ threw 71 pitches but did so in only 2 2/3 innings. Only 34 of those pitches were strikes. He laboured, to be generous, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks. Afterward, Happ saw his afternoon in a positive light. "It was good," he said. "I felt strong out there. Maybe a little too good but everything was good. Health was good." The health to which Happ refers is his back, an ailment which has kept him out of Grapefruit League action since he was pulled in the first inning of a March 3 start against the Twins. Happ intends to focus on developing his rhythm, interrupted due to injury, next time out. Hes looking to more consistently harness the new arm slot he employed in the final month of last season. Happ watched video of his start and noticed hed reverted to an over-the-top angle. Its all in the name of better efficiency. "Thats the same story for everybody," said Gibbons. "To be successful in the big leagues youve got to throw a lot of strikes. Youve got to throw that strike one. You fall behind guys, it turns everything in the hitters favour and just the opposite for the pitcher. Hes capable of doing that." Two weeks ago, the 31-year-old was bothered by Anthopoulos suggestion that his spot in the starting rotation was in question. Happ isnt dwelling on it now, saying he cant worry about what he cant control. Its apparent he will be on the team, as will Esmil Rogers and Todd Redmond, his competitors for a final rotation job. The question is who will be the starter and which two will work out of a bullpen which is expected to feature eight relievers. Its believed Happ is in the drivers seat, partly because Rogers doesnt throw enough of his repertoire for strikes and Redmond tends to struggle once the oppositions lineup turns over. Remember, too, that Happ is owed $5.2 million this year on an extension signed the day Ricky Romero was cut from camp last spring. The idea of having $12.7 million on the books for Happ and Romero, with neither in the starting rotation, cant be a pleasant one. "I dont feel like Im far," said Happ. "You guys, youre going to take that outing for what it was and it doesnt look pretty. Pitch-wise, like I said, Im up to 70 and next time be 85-90 and still feel strong thatll be a good thing. Im close." "Im looking forward to his next start," said Gibbons. &qquot;Thats all Ive got to say. Nike NFL Jerseys China. " The game of hot potato continues on Thursday when the Blue Jays visit the Phillies. Another back end of the rotation candidate gets the start. Over to you, Esmil Rogers. ROMERO AND STROMAN REASSIGNED Ricky Romero and Marcus Stroman shipped out to minor league camp on Wednesday morning. Both were outsiders, at best, to crack the opening day roster but both impressed at times during Grapefruit League play. "We just feel they both need more work," said manager John Gibbons. "As far as Ricky, hes moving in the right direction. We really like what he did this camp. Just go down there and polish it up. Stro, hes kind of the odd man out. He had trouble throwing strikes (Tuesday). Hes got to do that. They both need more work." After two down years the bar wasnt set high for Romero. With that as a consideration, its fair to say he exceeded expectations. He had two positive outings before he cratered against the Tigers on Tuesday, reverting to his wild ways. "He showed us enough in the previous two outings before (Tuesday) that you know what, hey, its coming," said Gibbons. "Its a long road and you never really know whether a guy is going to make it back or not but he was starting to show the signs of it." Stroman showed flashes of the pitcher the Blue Jays believe he will become but he was inconsistent all spring, culminating with an ugly performance on Tuesday. The Tigers knocked him around for seven runs on five hits in one-third of an inning. "We brought Stroman in, he pitched in Double-A for us and he had a legitimate shot (at making the club,") said Gibbons. "We dont think hes quite ready. Hes not polished yet so hes got to go down there and work on some things." The Jays still need to add two to a rotation which features R.A. Dickey, Brandon Morrow and Mark Buehrle. While the pitching coach offers praise to Drew Hutchison, Pete Walker wont yet guarantee him a spot. "Not ready to say that," said Walker. "Obviously, were extremely pleased with the way hes thrown the ball. Hes certainly shown hes capable of getting major league hitters out. His velocity, his strength, his bounce back, right now, after outings has been fantastic. Hes shown poise on the mound. Hes done everything you need to do to earn a spot, theres no question, but were just in a position right now, were sorting through some things to make sure we make the right decision." SANCHEZ AROUND FOR EXPERIENCE Aaron Sanchez is getting plenty of opportunity to pitch in Grapefruit League games, often the back end of a starters piggyback. Hes thrown as many as four innings in a game and is scheduled to work in relief of Todd Redmond against the Rays on Friday. "He wont make the team," said manager John Gibbons. "We want to keep him around, pitching in some of these games for the experience factor." Sanchez, 21, is considered the Jays top pitching prospect. He threw 109 2/3 innings combined with High-A Dunedin and in the Arizona Fall League last season. Its expected he will begin the year at Double-A New Hampshire. wholesale stitched jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys china ' ' '
As many as 10,000 players formerly under NHL contracts and their family members may pursue court cases against the league, court documents say, alleging it has promoted a culture of violence over the past decades but has failed to established proper rules and protocols for preventing head injuries. The suggestion that so many former players may sue the league comes in a statement of claim filed this week in Minnesota by Cory Larose, a New Brunswick-born forward who signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Wild in 2000 but only played seven games in the NHL with the New York Rangers in 2003. Larose, 39, played 425 games in the American Hockey League between 2001 and 2009. He now lives in Maple Grove, Minn., after suffering "multiple head traumas during his NHL career that were improperly diagnosed and treated by the NHL. Mr. Larose was never warned by the NHL of the negative health effects of head trauma, and still suffers from the effects of that head trauma." He is seeking damages of more than $5 million, the lawsuit says. Larose is the latest former NHL player to sue for concussion-related issues. The first group of players included former Maple Leafs stars Gary Leeman and Rick Vaive, who sued the league in November demanding damages and league-financed medical monitoring and treatment for injuries the players said they suffered because of their NH: careers. Vaive later dropped out of the lawsuit. "The NHL purposefully failed to establish reasonable rules and protocols for preventing head trauma and minimizing the effects of head trauma, including during games and practice," Laroses lawsuit says. "What changes the NHL made to its violent construct were purposefully ineffective and solely calculated by the NHL to mislead (Larose)...and the public into ceasing investigations into the risks and consequences of head trauma and the NHLs wrongdoing." The court filing says Larose is seeking to sue as part of a larger class of litigants that include approximately 10,000 former players who include any living players who signed an NHL contract, their spouses and dependents, the estates of deceased players, who have retired formally or informally from playing pro hockey in the NHL and who are not seeking active employment as players with an NHL team. A lawyer involved in one of the concussions lawsuits against the NHL said the judge overseeing the cases is hosting a meeting next week to set out a schedule. The next step is for the league to file motions to dismiss the cases. If those are denied, then the litigants will ask for permission to certify the cases as a class action. If that is denied, then the cases would be heard individually, the lawyer said. Its unclear what kind of judgment the players might ultimately receive if they win the case. In a similar lawsuit filed on behalf of 20,000 former NFL players, the NFL agreed to pay about $700 million. That judgment was later amended, with the league agreeing to an unlimited settlement, based on the medical needs of the players. "In hockey, its a bit easier case to prove because of the fighting in the sport, and hockey players, the ones I have talked to, are generally worse off than the football players," Steven Silverman, a lawyer representing NHL players, told TSN. "There are a number of tragic cases in hockey and weve seen many cases where we have heard that former NHL trainers have been an owners former mechanic or something. They have had no medical qualifications. "But on the other hand, the NHL players have been less willing to come forward, so that makes it harder to predict a settlement number." Several similar lawsuits filed against the NHL have been moved from other venues and will be heard in Minnesota. "None of this is surprising," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told TSN. "Its extremely predictable and doesnt have any impact on exposure or likelihood of ultimate success on the merits." The claims of Larose and other players have not been proven in court and the NHL has yet to file its statement of defence. To not win a European Cup for two years is more than understandable for most teams in world football but not this current Barcelona. They remain a long way away from winning it again, of course, but their performance in Manchester on Tuesday night was a sign of intent, a message they very much intended on delivering the moment their attention turned on the last 16 clash. When they landed on English shores this week, there was a sense of a new dawn, the opening of a new window for this current crop of winners to accomplish something relatively new. To many, it wasnt new at all. They did have eight of the 11 that started the triumphant 2011 final against Manchester United on the pitch from the start at Manchester City on Tuesday evening, but after they were massacred by Bayern Munich in last seasons semifinal, a line had been drawn on the past and it was time to concentrate on the future. All great teams need motivation to continually reach the top and this is it for Barcelona 2013-14. "Maybe (City) do not fear us anymore, because in the last two years, we didnt win the Champions League," said defender Gerard Pique on Monday. "We can still be the best, but we have to show the world we can do it. Tomorrow is a great chance." It was in England, at Wembley, in May of 2011 that they indeed cemented their place as one of the greatest club teams of all time. Pep Guardiola was hoisted in the sky by his players after securing their second European Cup in three years. It was a time for reflection but also of great excitement at what the team could go on to achieve. However, the great unscripted drama that is sport, went on to tell a story of a different Barcelona in the next two seasons of Champions League football. As so often happens in knock-out competition, things didnt always go to plan. Chelsea ended their quest in 2012 when they defended brilliantly at the Nou Camp while last season Barcelona were never quite at the level they had set in years previous. A loss in Milan at this stage last season gave us a glimpse of what was to come. A superb comeback at home showed us again just what they are capable of but two draws against an up-and-coming PSG side in the next round squeezed them through to the battle with Bayern that was so one-sided a new legacy had to be started. "It is not the end of an era," Andres Iniesta claimed at the time but that is not what the future will say. If this Barcelona team are to go on to accomplish more European success, it will be considered a new era; one without Pep, or Tito Villanova, a team under Gerardo Martinos wing influenced more now by Cesc Fabregas and, in time, Neymar. The finals against Manchester United in 2009 and 2011 were similar in how they dominated but also in how they took around 10 minutes to get going. Sir Alex Ferguson spoke about it often in the lead-up to their second final together. United needed to take advantage of that time if they were to win. Not surprisingly Barcelona had more of the ball but United had much more of it in that phase than at any other time, just like in Rome two years earlier. At Wembley, Barcelona completed just 10 per cent of their total successful passes in that opening 10 minutes but United completed 15.5 per cent of all of their successful passes. Once Barcelona got going, United, even when they got it back to 1-1, never got any rhythm into the match. All great teams need to keep reinventing themselves and, having waited 10 weeks since the group stages to show what they could do, this current Barcelona team exploded out of the blocks against Manchester City. There was a genuine purpose about their start and for 100 seconds, shortly after the first minute was over, City never touched the ball. Four minutes in and Barcelona had already completed 60 successful passes. The Spanish giants dominating possession is nothing new but them starting this way in the Champions League is. "Maybe we gave them too much respect in the beginning," reflected City skipper Vincent Kompany, whose mind was drawn back to a time in the game that City couldnt get out of their own half. Yet, despite this, it was hard to fault City for their style. At 0-0, they defended excellently and as the first half wore on, showed just why some had thought this was a very dangerous tie for Barcelona. Martinos men will always dominate possession to protect but it is against teams that counter efficiently and remain calm with the ball that they can look vulnerable. In Yaya Toure and Fernandinho, City have two outstanding midfielders who can ensure a team does exactly that. The pair were magnificent in the first half and it would have been interesting to see what more the Brazilian midfielder could have done, had he not tired playing with just 10 men after being injured for over two weeks. Both were pivotal in a key phase before half-time when City put 22 straight passes together. Not many teams can make Barcelona chase a ball for over a minute without getting it back but Manuel Pellegrinis men did that and were encouraged when they walked off at half-time at 0-0. Six minutes after the interval, however, the tie turned when Jesus Navas went down and Barcelona countered. It looked like a foul on Navas but he also seemed to try and sell it and at that point, left his team exposed. With them attacking, City had Toure and Fernandinho further away from their back four than normal and one magical pass from Iniesta sent Lionel Messi through on goal before he was chopped down by Martin Demichelis. Demichelis had to be sent off but had played well up until that moment. Well, however, may not have still been good enough and, certainly, was probably the peak of what he could have achieved. He was, for example, never going to be the rock that Kompany was throughout the match. All great teams have a way of exploiting their opponents main weakness and Barcelona did that in the 53rd minute and, later, in the dying minutes when Neymar and Dani Alves combined to rip apart Joleon Lescott and Gael Clichy on Citys left side. The Brazilian right back had a fine match and almost scored earlier when he did the same to Citys defensive pair but shot just wide of Joe Harts goal. In between those chances, City had their best period of the match when Barcelona showed a conservative approach showing just how vital an away victory in a knock-out stage was crucial. The red card didnt help City but neither did the presence of Lescott and Clichy, who can look nervous against Swansea let alone Barcelona, and the decision to take off Aleksandar Kolarov and leave on David Silva to protect them on the left proved costly. Barcelonas fantastic four Spaniards gave another football clinic on how to treasure the ball - 409 successful passes from 434 attempts (94.2%). Some call it boring, but once again, they were at their best when their team needed them to protect. Xavi and Fabregas….. Sergio Busquets and Iniesta….. Barcelona arrived in England this week with some fear because Man City were arguably the toughest team they could have been drawn against. They left knowing the stern test was passed, likely marching them into the last eight and a step closer to reaching the same level of success in Europe as they are accomplishing domestically. Instead, there is whats being called Native Areas. This is how Donald Ross created the course and this is how Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore restored it.Rather than being one-dimensional and having to hack it out of the rough, hitting it off the fairway now means a bit of a lottery. You might end up with a perfectly clean, if somewhat sandy lie or you could end up in a tangle of the wiregrass. If that happens, its like old times and youll be hacking out to the fairway. Depending on whom you talk to, its either a 50-50 or 60-40 or 80-20 situation that youll get a good result in the scrub. It will make for some interesting times. The Phil FactorWe all know that Phil has been runner-up at the U.S. Open six times and that the first of those came here, at Pinehurst back in 1999. We also know that he wants to win this tournament more than any other, to complete the Grand Slam. But we also know that Phil hasnt played very well this year and has struggled on the greens to the point that hes changed his grip coming into this week. Hell use the claw grip, which he says is better for the six to eight footers that will be key for this week. As much as Phil will tell you everything is great, that he loves the course, that his game is coming around, you have to think that the odds arent in his favour here. Oh CanadaGraham DeLaet will complete the Grand Slam here this week – not in terms of winning but just teeing it up in his fourth major. Sometimes we forget that hes still learning his chops in the majors and its a big step up to the majors. Yes, he is ultra-talented with a game that is suited well to this type of set up. In some ways, what he doesnt know may actually help him. In golf sense, DeLaet will always live and die by his putter and this week he is also going with a new putter grip, adopting a left-hand-low style that he says is working for him. History is not on his side this week – the last time a first-time entrant won the Open was way back in 1913. Of course sstreaks are made to be broken.dddddddddddd WeatherRight now, Pinehurst No. 2 is baked out and dry. There is lots of run in the course and the greens are firm. But the weather forecast is for rain over the next four days, (although so far, predictions of rain havent materialized). If that comes true, it will, as Rory McIlroy said, take the fire out of the course. It will aid the longer hitters and, if there are delays, make it tougher on those who have little patience. In short, it will change the number of golfers who can win this tournament and thats why a handful of players are doing the rain dance here this week. ImaginationIts a buzz word in golf. Along with creativity. But here at Pinehurst, there really is a need to think about just how youre going to hit a shot. With so many run-off areas around the greens, youre going to have to find the right way to get the ball close to the hole. So that means a) putting it up; b) chipping it close; c) use a hybrid to bump it; or d) some other club to get it close. The guy who puts its beside the cup will be deemed the most imaginative golfer of the week (instead of the champion golfer of the year). GreensThe greens at Pinehurst No. 2 arent necessarily small in overall size, but the effective area that can be used is tiny. In fact, on some of them, less than 25 per cent of the overall space can be used for a pin. These are not unlike Augusta Nationals putting surfaces, where hitting the right area – not just the green -- is a requirement. Some are more generous than others while a few are absolutely diabolical. McIlroy said the second is just such a green. He estimated that less than 20 per cent of the field will hit that green in regulation. Who Will Win?The golfer who will win this week is one who can drive it long as the course has some length. And it will be the player who can loft it way up in the air, as youll need some height to hold the greens. And it will be the player who has some creativity (see above) for those missed green recovery shots, and it will be the golfer who has a hot putter. Put those all together and I think your winner will be . . . Sergio Garcia. As 2013 winds to a close, TSN.ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. TSN.cas writing staff reflects on the best nfl moments from the past 12 months including the Chiefs turnaround, Megatron going off, records falling and more! The Chiefs go from worst to first... in a hurry By: Mike Hetherington The Kansas City Chiefs finished the 2012 season with an NFL-worst two wins. The team fired head coach Romeo Crennel and declined to re-sign quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn, who each started eight games the previous season. In the off-season the Chiefs hired Andy Reid and traded for quarterback Alex Smith, with the first pick in the draft the team selected tackle Eric Fisher. Overall the rest of the roster remained similar to the team that took the field in 2012. However, the results were almost completely opposite. The Chiefs started their season with nine straight wins before finally losing to the Denver Broncos. They went from being one of the NFLs worst teams to one of its best almost overnight with the additions of Smith and Reid. The offence went from ranked dead last in 2012 to inside the top ten this season. The defence soared from a meager 25th ranked unit to a vaunted top five group. In the final 10 games of the 2012 season, the Chiefs won just won game. In the first 10 games of 2013, the Chiefs lost just one game. Thats what you call a turnaround. Calvin Johnson goes off By: Isaac Owusu They call him Megatron for a reason. The Week 8 matchup between Detroit and Dallas was memorable for a number of reasons. There were the two occurrences of apparent Dez Bryant sideline explosions which were proven to not be what they seemed; there was also Matthew Stafford calling his own number to win the game for the Lions with only 50 seconds left, but there was one number that stood over everything else: 329. Johnson posted a career high 14 catches for 329 to lead the Lions to the 31-30 victory. Only eight yards away from breaking Flipper Andersons record set in 1989 of 336 yards. Johnson beat the Cloyce Boxs former Lions franchise record of 302 yards set in 1950. Johnsons catches ranged from two yards to 87, with seven going for 20 or more. To take further context of Johnsons dominance, the entire Dallas Cowboys team finished with 268 total net yards, still 61 less than Johnson alone. The games second highest receiver to him in terms of yardage was Bryant who only tallied 72 yards on three grabs and on the Lions, Kris Durham had four catches for 54 yards. Records of four, we have two more By: Mike Hetherington Peyton Manning was the runner-up for the 2012 NFL MVP, in 2013 he came out of the gate in a hurry looking to lock up the trophy early in the season. He set an NFL record with 15 touchdowns in the first four games of a season, including tying the NFL record for touchdowns in a game with seven in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens. Though Manning was a preseason favourite to set an NFL record this year, Josh Gordon was not. Coming off an 805-yard 2012 season with the Cleveland Browns, Gordon was suspended for the first two games of this season for violating NFLs substance abuse policy. By Octobers trade deadline, it seemed Gordon was sure to be traded with rumours about him swirling around several teams but, in the end, the Browns kept him. The decision paid off. Gordon set an NFL record with 774 receiving yards in just four games from Week 10 to Week 14, he also took the lead in NFL receiving yards. Gordon also became the first player in NFL history to have back-to-back 200-yard receiving games with 237 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and 261 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even more impressive for Gordon, the quarterbacks who threw him passes in that stretch were Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden. Best Sunday Ever? By: Mike Hetherington Four games wielded unforgettable moments for fans to remember for years in Week 14. First, the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions kicked off in white-out conditions. Playing with six inches of snow on the field and more falling, the Lions fumbled the ball seven times. LeSean McCoy ran through the snow (and the Lions) with ease setting an Eagles franchise record with 217 rushing yards in a 34-20 win that saw a 14-point third quarter deficit erased. Baltimore and Pittsburgh were also hit with less severe snow storms. In Baltimore, the Ravens and Vikings both had trouble scoring until the final two minutes. The two teams combined for 36 points in the final 2:05 with the Ravens winning by scoring a nine-yard touchdown with four seconds left. The Steelers, down six points to the Miami Dolphins with one second left, attempted a hook and ladder play. After five laterals, including one to offensive tackle Max Starks, the Steelers found receiver Antonio Brown in space. He ran 64 yards for a touchdown… it appeared. As it turned out Browns foot went out of bounds at the 12-yard line, the Dolphins were awarded the win and the Steelers playoff hopes disappeared. The New England Patriots followed that up scoring 14 points in 30 seconds with a recovered onside kick in between the scores in sub-zero conditions in Foxborough. The Patriots jumped from down 26-14 with 1:01 remaining in the game to beating the Browns 27-26 after a Browns 58-yard field goal, with one second left, fell short of the goal posts. These finishes on frozen grass led to an epic and unforgettable weekend in the NFL on that left fans asking "best Sunday ever?" Its certainly in the conversation. Tom Brady loses his weapons By: Isaac Owusu Take a look at the box score January 20s AFC Championship Game between of the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens, now look at the Patriots latest box score. The glaring differences are both hilarious and amazing. Tom Bradys passing number this season have taken a dip, and it would most certainly appear that he misses those receiving options that he had at the top of the year. In that AFC Championship match, Brady had connected on passes to Wes Welker, Aaron Hernandez, Brandon Lloyd, Shane Vereen, Deion Branch and Danny Woodhead. Of those names only one is still on the Patriots roster, Vereen who missed eight games due to a broken wrist. Welker departed to play with Bradys rival Peyton Manning in Denver. Hernandez was released from the team after being charged with first degree murder and multiple gun charges. Lloyd was released in June and remains a free agent, and Woodhead joined the San Diego Chargers in the off-season. Currently on pace to win the AFC East and compete for the number one seed , Patriots replacements include not-so household names like Danny Amendola, Julian Edelman, Austin Collie, Michael Hoomanawanui and rookies Aaron Dobson, Kembrell Thompkins, Josh Boyce. Quite the difference that less than a year makes. The Baltimore Ravens: Footballs most patient team By: Mike Hetherington A 34-minute delay due to a power-outage almost cost the Baltimore Ravens their Super Bowl victory when the San Francisco 49ers mounted a comeback that fell just short after the delay. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis believed the NFL was involved in creating the blackout to stop the game from being a blowout. However in the 2013 season, the Ravens would twice more be delayed - not by electricity or the NFL - but by Mother Nature. The Ravens had their season-opening game delayed 34 minutes, the exact same amount as the Super Bowl, by lightning at Mile High Stadium against the Denver Broncos. Then, 10 weeks later, the Ravens had to sit through an almost two-hour delay against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field due to severe weather before the first quarter could resume. Only three NFL games in 2013 were delayed for any reason, all three involved the Ravens. In the two games the Ravens could find no one to blame following the Super Bowl, they were winless, including a 49-27 blowout loss to the Broncos. If its not the Russians, it could be the Swedes, Finns, Czechs or Americans. The gold-medal winner likely will come from this group in Sochi, but forecasting the Olympic champion in the mens hockey tournament has never been easy. Since the participation of NHL players in 1998 there have been three different winners in the Czech Republic, Canada, Sweden and Canada again in four Winter Games. Its a short-term event and things can go wrong in a hurry for the top teams. A hot goaltender can steal a game in the medal round and all of a sudden a favourite is sitting on the sidelines. The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to grab their first lead of the second round on Monday when the series shifts to New York City for Game 3 at Madison Square Garden. This best-of-seven set is tied at one game apiece. The Rangers opened the series with Fridays 3-2 overtime win in Pittsburgh, but the Penguins rebounded with a 3-0 victory Sunday in the Steel City. New York went 20-17-4 at Madison Square Garden during the regular season and posted a 2-1 record on home ice against Philadelphia in the opening round. The Rangers, of course, eliminated the Flyers with a 2-1 Game 7 victory at MSG on Wednesday. Pittsburgh and the Rangers split a pair of meeting in New York this season, but the Pens have claimed five of the last seven regular-season encounters in the Big Apple. Marc-Andre Fleury anchored Sundays home win over the Rangers, making 22 saves to set a franchise record with his seventh career playoff shutout. Pittsburghs frequently criticized netminder also picked up his 50th career postseason win, becoming the 17th goalie in league history to reach the milestone. "He was very good tonight," Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said of Fleury. "The calmness and how he made the saves ... It made it feel like it wasnt as many (chances). But the puck was in the crease a little bit and he played it really well. He deserved the shutout tonight." Kris Letang was credited with a goal and collected assists on third-period goals by Jussi Jokinen and Evgeni Malkin. Letangs goal was the 15th of his postseason career, tying Larry Murphy for the most by a defenseman in franchise history. Pittsburgh won despite giving the Rangers three power-play opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Pens killed off the three early penalties and New York finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play. "Maybe the penalty killers set the tone for us," said Bylsma. "Maybe it was them stepping over the boards in those situations. You are not happy about having to kill three in a row but they do a great job for us and I thought, to a man, our players were extremely good tonight." Sidney Crosby is still without a goal in eight playoff games this spring, but the Penguins star captain did register six shots on net in Game 2. Crosby, who has 40 career postseason goals, has gone 13 straight games in the playoffs without scoring. He has six assists in this postseason. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 32 shots for New York, which has now failed to score on 29 straight opportunities with the power play. The Blueshirts are just 3- for-37 with the man advantage in this postseason. "Power play had some looks," Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault said. "Could have given us momentum, we didnt finish. Power play ultimately is my responsibility, and Ive got to find the right trigger points here to make it work and spend the night trying to figure it out." New York is aiming for its first playoff series win against Pittsburgh, which has won all four previous postseason meetings. The Pens boast a 17-5 all-time record against the Rangers in the playoffs and a 7-2 mark at the Garden. Overall, the Rangers have won seven of nine and 12 of their last 17 home playoff games. Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik has missed three straight games for Pittsburgh with an undisclosed injury and expects to sit out again on Monday. Orpik has been sidelined since missing Game 6 against Columbus in the opening round and Robert Bortuzzo has filled in for him. The Rangers will also host Game 4 of this set on Wednesday before the series heads back to Pittsburgh for Fridays Game 5. The Atlanta Falcons, meanwhile, still have the inside edge at winning the NFC South despite checking in at three games under .500. The playoff hopefuls shoot for a much-needed victory this Sunday when the Cardinals visit the Falcons and the Georgia Dome. Arizona had a six-game winning streak halted with a 19-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday. The dropped the Cardinals to 9-2 on the year, but they are in danger of losing more ground this weekend as the Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers on Thanksgiving night. That improved Seattle to 8-4 on the year and it could move within a game of first place if Arizona losses to Atlanta. Despite holding an opponent under 20 points for a seventh straight game, the Cardinals were bested by the Seahawks after getting held to just 204 yards of offense and a 23-yard field goal by Chandler Catanzaro in the second quarter. Drew Stanton connected on 14-of-26 passes for 149 yards and an interception for the Cardinals, who lost for the first time since Oct. 5 at Denver. Everybody took turns today. It wasnt one position group or anything like that. Offensively, we didnt play well enough to win, said Stanton. Any time you score three points and come in here and only put up that number, youre not going to be successful. Defensive end Calais Campbell accounted for three of Arizonas season-high seven sacks, but the offense failed to get much done without wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald had his consecutive games played streak halted at 110 due to a knee injury as he sat out a contest for the first time since Dec. 2, 2007 versus Cleveland. The setback denied Arizona in its first bid to record double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1975-76. Atlanta, meanwhile, had a two-game winning streak snapped with Sundays 26-24 setback to Cleveland. The loss dropped the Falcons to 4-7, but they remain tied for first place in the division with the New Orleans Saints. Matt Bryant hit a go-ahead 53-yard field goal for the Falcons with under a minute left to play, but the Browns took over with 44 seconds on the clock and moved close enough to allow Billy Cundiff to convert on a 37-yard field goal try as time expired. Matt Ryan was 27-of-43 passing for 273 yards with one interception and touchdown passes to Julio Jones and Jacquizz Rodgers. This was a tough loss for our team because it felt like it was our game to win, said Atlanta cornerback Desmond Trufant, who had an interception. You have to give the Browns a lot of credit because they found a way to come out on top. I felt like we made a lot of plays in the game but I guess it was not enough. We just couldnt stop them from scoring the last-second field goal. Arizona picked up a 27-13 victory at home over Atlanta on Oct. 27, 2013 and lead the all-time series 15-12. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Ryan and Atlantas seventh-ranked passing offense will try to move the ball against a Cardinals defense that held Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch to just 39 yards last weekend and also has racked up 17 sacks in the past three games. Arizona had just eight sacks through its first eight games and now ranks 11th in total defense and third against the run at 84.5 yards allowed per game. The Cardinals have now allowed a 100-yard rusher in 21 straight games and has held teams under 100 yards rushing total in 10 of 12 games this season. That leaves a lot of pressure on Ryan, who has been picked off nine times in his past two meetings with the Cardinals. He was intercepted five times in a 2012 meeting and another four times last year, marking the only two times in 105 career games he has thrown four or more picks in a game. Ryan also has posted a passer rating below 50.0 just six times, with two of those coming against Arizona. Theyre playing with a lot of confidence, playing at a high level. Defensively, theyre really good at all three levels, Ryan said of Arizonas defense. Theyve done a great job of playing to their system regardless of whos been in there.dddddddddddd Theyre missing some of the guys that have been really productive for them in the past, but the guys that have filled in have played well within the scheme. They put pressure on you with the scheme. Ryan has thrown a touchdown pass in 16 straight games and Jones figures to be one of his main targets as he tries to solve the Arizona defense. Jones has racked up 50 catches for 802 yards and four touchdowns in his past seven games at Georgia Dome. Also, fellow wideout Roddy White has been slowed this week by an ankle injury, but he should play. Atlanta safety William Moore could also return from a shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve/designated to return after Week 4. Moore has 14 career picks and has 16 tackles in four games this season. The Falcons defense ranks last in total yards (409.9) and passing yards (284.1) allowed per game, but did pick up three interceptions versus the Browns. Trufant and safeties Kemal Ishmael and Dezmen Southward all had picks. Ishmael has intercepted a pass in each of the last three games and leads the team with a career-high four picks, while Trufant has an interception in two consecutive games while leading the team with 12 passes defensed. Their job would be easier this weekend if Fitzgerald didnt play, but the wideout said this week he is much improved. I feel good and everyday its getting stronger and stronger. Im highly likely (to play), but its not my call, said Fitzgerald, who has 46 catches for a team-high 658 yards with two touchdowns. Arizona showed its weakness without Fitzgerald against Seattle as it gained only 64 yards on the ground and ranks 31st in the NFL with 78.4 rushing yards per game. Without running back Jonathan Dwyer since mid-September following his arrest on domestic violence charges, the Cardinals have seen running back Andre Ellington rush for just 648 yards on 196 carries this season while matching Fitzgeralds 46 receptions. Ellington did have 154 yards rushing, including an 80-yard TD, last season versus the Falcons and should finally get some help down the road after Arizona signed veteran Michael Bush for the rest of the season. The 245-pound Bush has not played since last season with Chicago, so there is a pretty solid chance he wont be active against the Falcons. We didnt sign him for this week. We signed him for the long haul, so well have him ready when we need him and well go from there, said Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. It would be hard to have a guy who didnt play in OTAs and didnt have a training camp, for me to give him the ball on Sunday would be pretty hard. OVERALL ANALYSIS Arizona has had success in winning the games it should win, with its lone losses coming against last seasons Super Bowl participants. The Cards responded with a nice winning streak after the loss to Denver and may need the same kind of effort to hold off Seattle. When we lost to Denver, we lost pretty bad, but we bounced back, won six straight, special teamer Justin Bethel told Arizonas website. We knew going into Seattle it would be a tough game. Its one of the hardest places to play in the NFL. This late in the season, Arizona cant afford to look past Atlanta despite upcoming games against Kansas City, San Francisco and Seattle. The Falcons know they are lucky to be in the position they are in as far as playoff chances and could be a motivated team down the stretch. You cant help but understand where youre at. Moving forward weve got everything we want right in front of us, said Ryan. Obviously, we cant change the previous 11 games, and what weve done up until this point; I just hope that we can control what we do moving forward. The Falcons have a chance to pull off the upset if the Cardinals offense struggles for another week in a hostile environment. That will depend on Ryan having a good game, but he has won two of three in his career versus the Cardinals and Atlanta should be able to put up just enough points at home. Quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Joe Flacco will again lead the charge on Saturday night when the Ravens visit Heinz Field looking for their first postseason victory over the Steelers. Joe Greene, James Harrison, Troy Polamalu, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are just a few names that come to mind when discussions about the Steelers and Ravens take place, but both teams set franchise records this season in points and yards. Behind an excellent effort from Roethlisberger, which included him becoming the first player in NFL history to throw six touchdown passes in back-to-back weeks, the Steelers set new marks in 2014 with 436 points and 6,577 yards. They ranked second in the league with 411.1 yards per game and seventh with 27.3 points per game. The Ravens were right behind with 25.6 points per game and ranked 12th with 364.9 yards per game. In all, Baltimore set new club records with 409 points and 5,838 yards. Baltimore won three of its final four games of the regular season to earn a wild card spot, yielding 13 points or fewer in each victory to finish at 10-6. The Ravens were fourth against the run and eighth in total defense while allowing 18.9 points per game to rank sixth in the NFL. Still, the Ravens needed a little help to make the postseason for the sixth time in seven seasons as they needed to couple last Sundays 20-10 win over Cleveland with Kansas Citys 19-7 triumph over San Diego. That put Baltimore back in the playoffs after sitting out in 2013. It feels good. I remember sitting at home last year, a week from now, and it didnt feel very good, said Flacco. So, that at least wont be happening this year, and it feels very good. Its a great locker room right now, and weve just got to do all we can to go get ready, have fun this week and get ready for another challenge. Its a big challenge for the Ravens, who are 0-3 versus the Steelers in the playoffs. All three setbacks have come in Pittsburgh. It is just going to be another one of those great moments in the Ravens- Steelers rivalry that we are looking forward to, said Ravens coach John Harbaugh. Its another playoff game there. Wed like to win one of those one of these days in their place, and were going to do our darndest to try to pull that off Saturday night. Baltimore has split 14 meetings with Pittsburgh in the regular season since Harbaugh took over as coach in 2008 and 10 of the those meetings have been decided by three points or fewer. That was not the case when the Ravens last visited the Steelers, a 43-23 win for Pittsburgh in which Roethlisberger threw six touchdown passes and 340 yards without getting picked for a 136.6 passer rating. Pittsburgh comes into this meeting having captured the AFC North for the first time since 2010, doing so thanks to a 27-17 win over second-place Cincinnati last weekend. Pittsburgh went 11-5 and brings a four-game winning streak into its first playoff meeting with Baltimore since a 31-24 victory in the 2010 divisional playoffs. Its typical AFC North ball. We take a lot of pride in being from the North. I look forward to it. Its going to be typical Steelers-Ravens. said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who has guided Pittsburgh to a pair of wins over Baltimore in the playoffs. Pittsburgh is back in the postseason for the first time in three years following a pair of 8-8 seasons and won the AFC North for the fourth time in Tomlins eight seasons as coach. The Steelers have won nine of their last 12 postseason games, but could be without running back LeVeon Bell for this game after he suffered a right knee injury in the third quarter against the Bengals. That could be a major loss for the Steelers as Bell amassed over 2,000 yards from scrimmage this season while accounting for 11 total touchdowns. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Injuries always play a key part in postseason football and the Steelers face a big one with the potential loss of Bell, who led the AFC with a club-record 2,215 yards from scrimmage. He ran for 1,361 yards and his 564 receiving yards were the most by a Pittsburgh running back in team annals. In fact, Bell joined Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk as the only players in NFL history with at least 1,300 yards rushing and 850 yards receiving. If Bell cant go, Roethlisberger may be forced to air it out even more without his top safety target as Bell was second on the club with 83 receptions. Its the playoffs. You always have to take more. Theres a sense of urgency from all of us. Were not going to rule anybody out yet. Im not a doctor but well see what happens, said Roethlisberger, who is 10-4 all-time as a starting quarterback in the playoffs. Roethlisberger had an excellent season, setting new club records with 408 completions, 4,952 passing yards and a 67.1 completion percentage. His passing yards tied Drew Brees of New Orleans for the NFL lead and Roethlisberger matched his own club record with 32 touchdown passes set in 2007. Wide receiver Antonio Brown played a big part in Roethlisbergers season, leading the NFL with 129 catches and 1,698 receiving yards.dddddddddddd Both of those also set club records as did Browns 13 touchdown receptions. Consistency is a big part of Browns game as he has at least five catches and 50 receiving yards in an NFL-record 32 straight games. He had a late 63-yard TD reception from Roethlisberger last weekend and also added a 71-yard punt return for a score. Antonio Brown is gifted. He runs all the routes; hes not just a deep threat, hes a route runner; reverses; as a punt returner, as we saw in the Cincinnati game last week. Hes a multi-dimensional guy that can score at any point in time, noted Harbaugh. The Ravens may be able to zero in closer on the QB-WR duo should Bell be unable to play. That would likely leave the bulk of the carries for undrafted rookie Josh Harris. Dri Archer could also see touches and the Steelers this week signed Ben Tate, but Tomlin admitted it may take more than one guy to help fill Bells production. LeVeon contributes in a lot of ways. When youre talking about replacing an impact guy like him its not a one-man job. It never is. Its a multiple-man job and it might be a multiple-man job across positions, said Tomlin. The Ravens were excellent against the run this season, but lost Jimmy Smith and Asa Jackson to injury among others and allowed 248.7 yards per game through the air. That ranked 24th in the NFL, but Baltimore also tied for second with 49 sacks. No NFL duo had more quarterback takedowns this season than Ravens linebackers Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs. Dumervil produced a club-record 17 sacks and Suggs finished with 12. Suggs has 12 career playoff sacks, tied with Hall of Famer Reggie White for third all-time. Baltimore rookie defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan has his status for the game in doubt due to a foot injury, but the Ravens do catch a break as talented defensive tackle Haloti Ngata is eligible to return from a four-game suspension for violating the NFLs performance enhancing drug policy. The 30-year-old had 31 tackles in 12 games with two sacks and a pair of interceptions. I just feel like I owe these guys, said Ngata of his teammates. So, Im just going to do whatever I can to help the team, and Im definitely just ready to get back out there again. Said Roethlisberger of Ngata, Hes tough. He can the run. He can rush the passer. You dont usually get that from an interior guy. Usually thats the outside guys. Just the physical presence that he is, is what makes him so good. As Baltimore yielded just 19 sacks on the season, Flacco was able to set career highs with 3,987 passing yards and 27 touchdown passes. Wide receiver Torrey Smith was on the receiving end of 11 of those, ranking second in team history behind Michael Jacksons 14 in 1996, while first-year Raven Steve Smith led the team with 79 receptions and 1,065 yards. Running back Justin Forsett had a career-high 1,266 rushing yards for the Ravens and his 5.4 average yard per carry led the NFL. However, he had been held to just 67 yards rushing the previous two games before ripping off 119 versus the Browns. We have to be a good running team, because thats who we think we are, declared Harbaugh. Like the Ravens, the Steelers were solid against the run (100.3 YPG to rank sixth in the NFL) but yielded 253.1 passing yards per game and 23.0 points per contest. Still, linebacker Lawrence Timmons is coming off a Pro Bowl season with a club-high 132 tackles, defensive end Cam Heyward tied for the team lead with a career-best 7 1/2 sacks and cornerback William Gay returned all three of his interceptions for touchdowns. Pittsburgh has a pair of solid veteran defenders it can lean on in Harrison and Polamalu. Harrison has 6 1/2 sacks in 13 career playoff games along with a 100-yard pick six versus Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII, while Polamalu has three career postseason interceptions. Among those is a 40-yard pick-six versus Baltimore on Jan. 18, 2009. OVERALL ANALYSIS The only thing better than playoff football is playoff football between division rivals and the Steelers and Ravens should put forth an epic battle regardless of whatever struggles they had this season. Its a great challenge, said Harbaugh. We love this rivalry. We love being a part of it. Weve said that many times before, and I believe they feel the same way about it. This is probably what the NFL wanted more than anything to see these two AFC North teams go at it. I like to think were different. I like to think were still moving up but Im sure theyll say the same thing about themselves, said Roethlisberger. This game becomes a little less cut-and-dry with the potential absence of Bell, but home-field advantage should be huge for the Steelers. After all, there is a reason that the Ravens are 0-3 in the Steel City during the postseason. The Steelers have won four straight home playoff games at Heinz Field, going 7-3 all-time there in the postseason since it opened in 2001. Given Pittsburgh is the more consistent offensive threat, it should be able to improve on that record this Saturday. VANCOUVER -- Nicklas Jensen is likely not being sent back to the minors any time soon. The Vancouver Canucks rookie helped keep his teams flickering playoff hopes alive Wednesday night as he scored the only goal his team needed in a 2-0 victory over the Nashville Predators. It was Jensens third goal in four games, and also just the third of his NHL career. The Danish rookie has only played seven games this season since being promoted from the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League because of injuries to forwards Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler. "Its huge," said Jensen of his high-scoring ways. "Its tough to know what to expect when you get up here. The way weve been playing, its been really well. "So Im happy with it. We just need to keep it going and play this way." Jensen and Alex Edler scored one minute 13 seconds apart in the third period to break open a scoreless affair. The Canucks (32-30-10) posted their fourth win in seven games, but remained in 10th place while pulling within three points of eighth-place Phoenix. The win was timely because the Canucks remained a point up on the Winnipeg Jets, who beat Colorado earlier Wednesday night. Nashville (29-31-10) is in 12th place, dropping five points behind the Jets. Vancouver goaltender Eddie Lack made 30 saves for his fourth shutout of the season -- tops among NHL rookies -- as the Predators enjoyed a 30-22 edge in shots. "Im the first one to say I havent got to my best games so far and it feels good coming out with a shutout tonight for sure," said Lack, who has inherited the No. 1 role following Roberto Luongos trade to Florida. Jensen finally opened the scoring as he picked up a loose puck while Nashville defenceman Seth Jones was checking Henrik Sedin, and then roofed a shot over Nashville goaltender Carter Huttons outstretched glove. "Henrik got the puck," said Jensen. "It was kind of scrambling and bobbling on his stick and he somehow he found a way to slide it over to me, and I just tried to release it and put it on net. "The guy (Henrik Sedin) can do a lot of things a lot of guys cant do. Thats also why hes so unique and one of the best players in the world. "When I came up here and heard that I could play with him, I knew I was gonna be ready." The 21-year-old Jensen, Vancouvers top draft choice in 2011 (29th overall), is proving himself at the NHL level in his first full season in North America. He was returned to the Ontario Hockey Leagues Oshawa Generals after he was drafted, and then split last season between a Swedish team and Vancouvers former Chicago Wolves AHL affiliate. Along he way, he has battled injuries and inconsistency. But he is proving himself to be a quick offensive study, with only nine NHL career games under his skates, after dressing for two last season. He is also impressing Canucks coach John Tortorella with his two-way play. "For a young guy, his positioning with the puck and without the puck, its really good," said Tortorella. The demanding Canucks coach said Jensen has thrived after starting slowly after his promotion. "I heard him say something where he really struggled early on, which he did, and then he just started getting some puck luck after that, and it just relaxed him," said Tortorella. "He doesnt think about it. He just plays." Edler gave the Canucks a 2-0 lead on a power play as he slid a slapshot between Huttons outstretched leg and the right post. The goal came only five seconds after Nashville defenceman Victor Bartley was penalized for interference. The puck went in while the infraction was being announced over the public address system. The Canucks were playing their first game back home after a four-game road trip. The Predators completed their third straight series of back-to-back games within nine days. Accordingly, neither team could muster a goal in the first two periods. Tortorella said fatigue took a toll on his club. "I dont think we played that well in the first period. I dont think we won many battles. I thought, in the second period, we started winning some battles. a Going into the third period (it was) next goal wins." The Canucks did not get a shot on goal until 9:27 of the first period. Vancouver then enjoyed a spurt of offence, dominating with teams at full strength, but could not be Hutton. The Preds controlled play for the rest of the period, but could not beat Lack. The Canucks goaltender denied Gabriel Bourque from close range following an odd-man rush. Near the end of the period, Lack stopped Patric Hornqvist twice on one-timers that occurred within a few seconds of each other. In the second period, Hutton stopped Edler as he came out of the penalty box, took a pass and rushed down the right wing. Moments later, Hutton foiled Dan Hamhuis on a wraparound and Alex Burrows on the ensuing rebound. "I thought it was a pretty even game," said Nashville coach Barry Trotz. "Both teams had some looks and were just not scoring easy right now. The Preds were shut out for the ninth time this season as their playoff hopes grew slimmer. "Weve got to get some goals for our goaltender," said Trotz. Notes: The Canucks lost Burrows for a while after Jensens goal as he appeared to be slashed on the left hand by Preds captain Shea Weber as the puck went in. Burrowss glove came off on the play, but he was able to come back. Tortorella said Burrows will be evaluated Thursday. a Nashville centre Paul Gaustad was injured when Canucks defenceman Edler checked on a breakaway and proceeded to fall on him in the first period. Gaustad went to the dressing room and did not return. a Tortorella said defenceman Chris Tanev will be out three to four weeks with a broken finger suffered while blocking a shot Monday in Tampa Bay. If the Canucks miss the playoffs, he could be done for the season. No updates were given on injured centre Ryan Kesler and winger Daniel Sedin, who remain out indefinitely with undisclosed ailments. a Canucks centre Brad Richardson returned after missing seven games with an undisclosed upper-body injury. a Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis and his family donated $55,000 in conjunction with a local radio station to the teams charitable childrens foundation. Martin St. Louis scored his second goal of the game 4:27 into overtime, Steven Stamkos had two goals -- his NHL-leading 38th and 39th -- and two assists in his 300th career game, and the Lightning beat the San Jose Sharks 6-5. "Character, thats the word that came to mind for me," Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher said. "Giving up is two words that dont exist in my vocabulary. Its just totally against my nature." The teams announced a trade before the game, with the Sharks obtaining centre Dominic Moore and a seventh-round draft pick this year for a 2012 second-round pick. Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said the team also plans to keep Pavel Kubina out of the lineup while it attempts to trade the defenceman. "Were not looking just to get rid of guys," Yzerman said. "If we got offers that were really good, we would act on it. Getting the second-round pick is very valuable to us." St. Louis got the winner from close range off a pass from Victor Hedman, who tied a career high with three assists. "If we throw in the towel because of whats going on around us, its going to be a pretty miserable last two months," St. Louis said. "I think we have enough character here we can build on tonight." Stamkos has 158 goals and 298 points overall. Teddy Purcell and Steve Downie had the other Tampa Bay goals. The Pacific Division-leading Sharks got goals from Logan Couture, Michal Handzus, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Colin White and Tommy Wingels, who got San Jose even at 5-5 during a 2-on-1 with 5:10 remaining in the third. Stamkos made it 4-4, scoring from the slot 2:44 into the third. "It happens. I probably shouldnt be that close to the blue paint, but you have to learn from it." Tampa Bays Dwayne Roloson made 45 saves, including five in overtime. Niemi stopped 19 shots. "He wasnt any good," San Jose coach Todd McLellan said about Niemi. "I protect him a lot and talk about the team. He has to be better, flat out has to be better. They scored four goals on net play, rebounds, picking up the garbage, wraparounds, jams. Thats our D men. Thats our low forwards. So everybody has some responsibility, but (Niemi) knows he has to be better." Vlasic got his first goal in 17 games at 14:37 of second and White stopped a personal 148-game goal drought, dating to Dec. 28, 2009, 67 seconds later as San Jose went ahead 4-3. Tampa Bay, outshot 20-4 during the second, had taken a 3-2 advantage on Downies goal at 14:08. Handzus tied it 2 from the low slot at 1:44 of the second. After Stamkos scored at 9:30 of the first, he assisted on Purcells power-play goal that gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead with 24.4 seconds left in the first. DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki was watching when the Dallas Mavericks took a double-digit lead for good against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The steady progress of Devin Harris had a lot to do with the surge. Nowitzki scored 23 points, Harris had a season-high 16 and the Mavericks pulled away from Cleveland 124-107 Monday night, handing the Cavaliers their fifth straight loss. Nowitzki was on the bench for most of a key third-quarter stretch led by Jose Calderon, Brandan Wright and Harris, who was playing his eighth game after missing the first 41 following off-season toe surgery. "Just trying to get comfortable out there," Harris said. "I am trying to make the most of my minutes." Harris had seven points on a 9-2 run that gave the Mavericks their first 15-point lead, and Wright scored nine of his 14 points in the third. Jose Calderon had four of his game-high 10 assists in the quarter and hit a pair of 3-pointers. "Were just passing the ball and trying to get a really nice pace," said Calderon, who scored 11 points. "I think it was good for us." Kyrie Irving had 27 to lead the Cavaliers, who have dropped seven of their last eight. Anthony Bennett, Clevelands rookie No. 1 pick averaging just 2.8 points per game coming in, had eight in the second quarter and finished with 11. "There were a few instances in this game where we gave ourselves a legit chance to get into the game, but we just couldnt get over the hump," said Irving, who scored at least 20 for the ninth time in 10 games. Dallas Monta Ellis started fast after going most of the first half without scoring Friday against Sacramento and finished with 22 points and seven assists. Harris had his previous season high of 14 points in three straight games before getting seven in Fridays win over Sacramento. He finally broke the 14-point mark with two free throws, and then assisted on a dunk by Samuel Dalembert that gave Dallas its biggest lead at 106-87. Dalembert had 18 points -- two off his season high -- and two blocks after not even attempting a shot and getting three rebounds when the Mavericks held on to beat the Cavaliers last month in Cleveland, despite a combined 37 points and 31 rebounds from Tristan Thompson and Anderson Varejao. "I cant guarantee you the offence because some days the ball is coming to me and some days I only take one field goal," Dalembert said. "What Im trying to do is make sure the guys are crashing the boards." Five days after Cleveland general manager Chris Grant questioned his teams will, the Cavaliers didnt quit. They scored eight quick points and had a chance to make it nine when Jarrett Jack got fouled after making a 3-pointer. Jack missed the free throw, and the Cavaliers couldnt get the deficit under 10 after that. Luol Deng scored 18 points, Thompson had 17 and both had eight rebounds for the Cavaliers, who had seven players in double figures. "I thought offensively we did some nice things out there," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. "Weve got to keep grinding until we get out of it. The only thing we can do is work, keep our head up and keep looking forward." Nowitzki, who was averaging 33 points in his previous three games, had 16 in the first half and matched Dalembert with eight rebounds for the game. Nowitzki scored the last eight points on a 13-2 run that put the Mavericks up 52-39, but he missed his last three shots of the first half as the Cavaliers got back within seven at halftime. Ellis followed up an 11-point fourth quarter that boosted a rally to beat Sacramento with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the first half against Cleveland. The two sides had agreed to the deal shortly after the start of free agency on Tuesday but the contract was never signed after team doctors would not give Saffold a clean bill of health after a physical on Wednesday. The Raiders did not give a reason why Saffold failed the physical. Saffold was set to be paid $16 million in 2014 and $27.6 million over the first three years as the Raiders viewed him as a building block in a rebuilding plan after 11 straight years without a playoff berth. But Saffold had durability problems in his four years with St. Louis, missing 17 games with a variety of injuries. He missed time with a knee injury last season and has also had problems with his neck, shoulder and pectoral muscle in his career. Despite those issues, the Raiders valued Saffold higher than homegrown tackle Jared Veldheer, who was allowed to leave as a free agent for Arizona on Tuesday. The Raiders did sign one offensive lineman, finalizing a five-year, $30 million deal with former New York Jets tackle Austin Howard on Wednesday. But with about $60 million in salary cap room heading into free agency and numerous holes to fill following two straight four-win seasons, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie needs to find more help soon. The Raiders did host a number of free agent defenders on Wednesday in hopes of upgrading that side of the ball. Former Pittsburgh linebacker LaMarr Woodley tweeted that he was headed for a visit to Oakland and Dallas defensive tackle Jason Hatcher also tweeted his plans to visit. ESPN reported that former New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck and cornerback Terrell Thomas are also set to visit the Raiders. The Raiders need help on their pass rush after losing last years lleading sacker and most consistent defender LaMarr Houston to Chicago in free agency.dddddddddddd The other three starting defensive linemen - Pat Sims, Vance Walker and Jason Hunter - are also free agents. Oakland also has holes in the secondary with starting cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins and free safety Charles Woodson also free agents. After showing some promise early in the season, the Raiders defence wilted late and allowed the second-most points per game (28.3) in franchise history. Oakland has had two of the three highest scoring seasons allowed in coach Dennis Allens first two years with the franchise. Tuck, Woodley and Hatcher all have proven themselves as accomplished pass rushers in the NFL, a trait the Raiders have been lacking in recent years. They have not had a player reach double figures in sacks since Derrick Burgess and Warren Sapp both did it in 2006. Tuck was rated as the ninth best pass rushing defensive end by Pro Football Focus last season when he had 11 sacks, 12 quarterback hits and 44 hurries. Woodley struggled with injuries the past three seasons but was still an effective rusher when healthy. He ended last season on injured reserve with a calf injury and the Steelers released him because of his high salary. After averaging 11 sacks per season from 2008-11, Woodley has only nine sacks in 24 games the past two years. He did have eight quarterback hits and 24 hurries last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Hatcher was one of the most productive inside pass rushers last season with Dallas, when he had 11 sacks to lead all defensive tackles. Thomas, who missed the 2011 and 12 seasons with a pair of ACL tears, struggled in his return last season in coverage for the Giants. He allowed 52 catches on 79 balls thrown his way for 550 yards and six touchdowns for a 106.0 passer rating against, according to game-charting by Pro Football Focus.
