New York City has a plethora of museums of all kinds to offer tourists and museum enthusiasts. The city in fact has some of the best museums in the world and add to the large list of must do things in the Big Apple. Below a look at five of the best museums in NYC.

1. Museum of Modern Art - One of the best known museums in NYC is the Museum of Modern Art. This museum opened its doors in 1929, and the large area it covers is full of great examples of contemporary art. The Museum of Modern Art is located on 11, West 53rd Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue. It is closed on Wednesdays. You can see some classical art at this gallery from many of the masters from the last few hundred years. This is a world class museum and a must visit location for art and museum lovers.

2. Children’s Museum of Manhattan - A wonderful museum that is sure to fascinate youngsters is the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, which offers educational, interactive experiences that are thoroughly enjoyable. This is a very good family attraction and is normally popular also with the parents. The museum often has many interactive elements and this also keeps the interest of the youngsters. Entrance fees are relatively cheap and overall this is a worthwhile attraction.

3. The American Museum of Natural History – This excellent museum has been open since 1869; it boasts a planetarium and exciting exhibitions that are often held here. This museum is vast and tourists should be prepared to spend a good deal of time here if they want to see everything. Do not miss the Rose Center for Earth and Space, the IMAX theatre, the dinosaur exhibit and the Sky Show at the American Museum of Natural History. Make sure to allow plenty of time for seeing everything in this museum. This is a sizeable and quite impressive site and one of the best of its kind in the world.

4. Guggenheim Museum, NYC - The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright - notable architect, is a great place to learn about culture. The spiral construction of the building is very interesting and the museum features an extensive collection of paintings, films and sculptures. The exhibition pieces inside the Guggenheim sometimes vary with guest exhibitions. There are always some excellent pieces on display though is what is one of New York’s top museums.

5. The Met – One museum that you should not miss seeing while you are in NYC, is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which houses more than two million works of art. The Met, as it is popularly known, was opened in 1870. This is a venue very popular with those seeking culture in New York City. The museum has a permanent exhibition area, in addition to guest displays from around the world. This venue also often offers presentations and talks from artists and also has an exntensive events calendar each year.
